The National Identity Card (NID) is becoming the key document for services in Nepal — SIM registration, passport applications, banking KYC, and social security. After enrollment, most people have one question: "Where is my card?" Here is how to check your status online.

What You Need Before Checking

When you enrolled for your NID, you received a receipt with a request or token number. Keep that receipt handy — the number on it is what the system uses to find your application. Your registered mobile number is also useful, since updates are often sent by SMS.

Checking Your Status Step-by-Step

  1. Open the official National ID portal at nationalid.gov.np on your phone or computer.
  2. Find the application status or card status option.
  3. Enter your request/token number from your enrollment receipt.
  4. Submit the form and your current application status will be displayed.

The status will tell you whether your application is still being processed, approved, or whether the card has been printed and dispatched to your enrollment office.

What the Statuses Mean

  • Under process: Your biometric and document verification is still ongoing. This is normal and can take time.
  • Approved / Printed: Your card has been produced and is on its way to the district office or ward where you enrolled.
  • Ready for distribution: Visit your enrollment center with your receipt and citizenship certificate to collect the card.

If Something Looks Wrong

If your status has not changed for a very long time, or the system cannot find your token number:

  • Visit or call the office where you enrolled with your receipt.
  • Check that you are typing the token number exactly as printed.
  • Keep your receipt safe until the physical card is in your hand — it is your only proof of enrollment.

Why I Teach This in Digital Literacy Sessions

Thousands of Nepalis pay middlemen for something they can do themselves in two minutes, for free, from their own phone. Checking your NID status yourself is a perfect first step into using Nepal's digital government services confidently — and once the card arrives, you can even download its digital version (see my eNID guide).
